Some Conversations Are Hard to Start

Maybe it happened gradually. The shower that used to happen every morning started happening every few days. Getting dressed became an ordeal that left your loved one exhausted before the day even began. You noticed things. A stain on a shirt that would have mortified her six months ago. A smell in the house that was not there before.

Or maybe it happened suddenly. A fall. A hospitalization. A discharge with instructions the hospital assumed someone at home could handle.

Either way, you are here because something has shifted. The person you love is struggling with tasks that used to be automatic, and the gap between what they can do and what they need is widening.

Watching a parent lose the ability to care for themselves is one of the most emotionally complex moments a family navigates. It touches grief, fear, guilt, and love all at once. And underneath all of it, one urgent question: how do we make sure they are safe, comfortable, and still themselves?

That is exactly what personal care is designed to address.

Ready to Get The Personal Care You Deserve?

You don’t have to figure this out alone. We’re here to listen, answer your questions, and help you find the right path forward.

What Is Personal Care?

Personal care is hands-on, non-medical assistance with the physical activities of daily life. These Activities of Daily Living, or ADLs, include bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, and other routines that help a person remain clean, comfortable, and supported at home.

Personal care is not medical care. Caregivers referred by NurtureCare are not nurses and do not perform skilled nursing tasks. What they provide is the essential physical support layer that keeps your loved one safe and dignified at home, without the cost, disruption, or emotional toll of moving to a facility.

It is also more than companion care. Where companion care focuses on social engagement and light daily assistance, personal care addresses the hands-on physical needs that require a trained, trustworthy presence in the most private moments of a person’s day.

What Personal Care Includes

Caregivers connected through NurtureCare assist with:

  • Bathing and hygiene assistance — safe, dignified support with showering, bathing, oral care, and skin care
  • Dressing and grooming — help selecting clothing, dressing, hair care, and maintaining personal appearance, because how someone feels about themselves matters
  • Toileting and incontinence care — compassionate, matter-of-fact assistance that preserves dignity
  • Mobility and transfer support — safe assistance moving from bed to chair, navigating stairs, and moving through the home
  • Fall prevention and safety monitoring — an attentive presence that reduces risk and responds immediately if something goes wrong
  • Medication reminders — ensuring the right medications are taken at the right time
  • Meal preparation and feeding assistance — nutritious meals and support for those who need help eating
  • Light housekeeping — keeping the living environment clean, safe, and comfortable
  • Transportation to appointments — getting to medical visits, therapy, and other essential appointments
  • Condition monitoring — noting changes in physical condition, appetite, mood, or behavior and communicating them to family

Who Personal Care Is Right For

Personal care may be appropriate when physical, cognitive, or recovery-related changes make bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility, meals, or other daily routines difficult to manage safely without assistance.

Personal Care May Help When

  • A senior has difficulty bathing or dressing independently.
  • Mobility limitations make transfers or walking more difficult.
  • A recent fall has affected confidence or independence.
  • A loved one is returning home after surgery or hospitalization.
  • Parkinson’s disease, stroke effects, or another condition affects daily function.
  • Memory loss interferes with personal hygiene or established routines.
  • A family caregiver can no longer provide all hands-on assistance.
  • Companion care no longer provides enough physical support.

If your loved one’s situation is not on this list, that does not mean personal care is not right for them. The best way to know is a conversation.

Dignity Is Not Optional

Hands-on personal care is intimate. Bathing someone, helping them dress, assisting with toileting. These are the most private moments of a person’s life, and they require a caregiver who approaches them with genuine respect, patience, and professionalism.

NurtureCare works through a structured questionnaire and interview process to help identify a caregiver whose experience, personality, availability, and preferences may align with your loved one’s needs. Every caregiver in the network is thoroughly background-checked and reference-verified before being connected with a family.

FAQs

What is the difference between personal care and home health care?

Home health care is medical care delivered at home, including skilled nursing, physical therapy, and wound care. It is typically ordered by a physician and covered by Medicare for a limited period. Personal care is non-medical daily living support that is not physician-ordered and is not time-limited. The two services often work alongside each other. A home health nurse may visit several times a week while a caregiver referred through NurtureCare provides daily personal care support between those visits.

NurtureCare prioritizes consistency, particularly for personal care. Familiarity and trust are essential.

Yes. Personal care can be arranged as hourly daytime visits, overnight care, or live-in care for those who need a consistent presence through the day and night.

Medicare and standard health insurance generally do not cover ongoing non-medical personal care. Some long-term care insurance policies may provide benefits, depending on the policy, eligibility requirements, elimination period, and approved services. Families should verify coverage directly with the insurer.

The matching timeframe depends on the service location, requested schedule, personal-care responsibilities, required experience, and suitable caregiver availability. Families with an urgent need should call 703-525-5900 to discuss current availability.
